Blog Housekeeping

Posted on 13 Jun 2009 by Andy

I’ve been guilty of neglecting the site for the past couple of months so I’m taking a few hours to do a little housekeeping. I noticed quite a few problems over the last week or two:

  1. My Twitter profile search monkey application had broken, either due to a change in Twitter’s markup or a tweak to Yahoo Search Monkey.
  2. The sample recipe search had problems, thanks to my host switching the default to PHP 4 (from PHP 5).
  3. Yahoo deleted the recursive pipe that I was using for twitter map widget which meant that markers weren’t showing up properly.
  4. The blog comment form stopped working. Not sure what caused this, something to do with FCKeditor and browser compatibility, I think.
  5. I was getting a lot of spam comments, so a few tweaks were made to confuse the spambots.

All these problems should now be fixed but please let me know if they recurr or if you find any other issues.

I recently relaunched my personal site too, which is now a Web 2.0 lifestream so head on over and check it out.

There is some great content in the pipeline for the next few weeks too, including a new look at hSlices, so don’t forget to subscribe to the RSS feed to get new posts the moment they are published.

Word Cloud

Posted on 30 Mar 2009 by Andy

Here’s a fun thing - a word cloud of my latest blog post entries, courtesy of Wordle.

Wordle: MMMeeja

It’s a cool way of visualising what I’m actually talking about on here. Hat tip to Dazzlin Donna for the inspiration.

Twitter features quite prominently, what do you think - should I post less about Twitter? More? Leave a comment.

Big Changes Afoot - MMMeeja Is Moving

Posted on 21 Jan 2009 by Andy

Big changes? No huge changes! We’re leaving rainy Leeds to head for sunny Adelaide, South Australia.

A map showing Adelaide

This means that I’ll have to scale back on taking on new clients for a while and there will be a fairly quiet period whilst we get established over there but MMMeeja and this blog will continue.

It’s a big step, but one that I’m looking forward to. I see this kind of change as another step forward in the adventure that is life. The couple of times that I’ve visited Adelaide, I’ve found it to be a really nice city (even though the beer is served in tiny little glasses). The people are friendly, the food is great and the weather is amazing.

I’ve already got my visa but we’re not heading off until April, so we can get things properly planned and hopefully the exchange rate will be a bit better by then. Both I and my girlfriend have family over there so we won’t be completely isolated.

Wish us luck!

No More Support For IE 6

Posted on 06 Jan 2009 by Andy

Just a short note to let you know that I won't be battling against Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 when developing this website any longer. The number of visitors using the browser has been steadily dropping over the past year and recent security advisories have brought the matter to a head.

Graph of IE 6 visits versus total visits

The end of IE 6 support also applies to customer sites unless specifically requested. We do support the following browsers:

  • Firefox 2 & 3
  • Internet Explorer 7 & 8
  • Safari & Webkit
  • Opera 9 & 10
  • Konquerer

Further browsers can be supported on request.

There was a campaign to hasten the demise of the awful browser about six months ago, called Save The Developers but they appear to have sold out now because the site redirects to microsoft.com. So no support from me.

What do you think? Am I being premature with ending support or is it a sensible move? The nasty CSS hacks will be removed from the site soon.

Comments Are Now DoFollowed

Posted on 29 Jul 2008 by Andy

Now that I have got comment spam under control, I’ve decided to “dofollow” the links on blog comments.

You comment, I follow

Only the links at the top of each comment are followed, not any links inside the comment itself.

If you are unsure of exactly “dofollow” entails, it means that every time you comment on this blog a little piece of link love flows through the interweb tubes to help your site get noticed by search engines.

Spammy or pointless comments like “Hi, nice site” will be deleted to maintain quality as before. Oh and older comments get link love too.

Thanks to Randa Clay for the graphic.

Bah! Comment Spam

Posted on 02 Jan 2008 by Andy

I see some spammers have already found this blog, so comments are disabled for the time being until I can get a fix in place. They should be reinstated soon, sorry for the delay.

Akismet should be doing its thing now and filtering out most of the spam, but manual moderation is also taking place. Thanks for your patience.

Website Updated

Posted on 11 Nov 2007 by Andy

The MMMeeja website was updated this weekend with quite a few changes. It's been static for a while but that the blogging software has been installed, future changes should be much easier to make.

The biggest change is, of course, our blog. It replaces the older "articles" section (redirects are in place, so there's no need to update your bookmarks) but unlike the older articles, blog entries accept comments. Let us know what you think.

If you spot anything that doesn't quite work as it should or could be improved, please leave a comment about that too.

There have also been quite a few behind the scenes tweaks, and there is still a lot of work to do so check back to the meta section for further updates.
